Description
The Church of Saint Lawrence is a church built in 1895 by architect R. Knill Freeman. It is constructed from yellow sandstone with red sandstone dressings and features a slate roof with red ridging tiles. The church has a nave with aisles, a south-west steeple, and a chancel with a south chapel, all designed in a simple Decorated style.
The two-stage tower includes angle buttresses that rise to corner pinnacles, a moulded arched south door, two square-headed lancet windows, and a clock face above. An octagonal belfry is situated between the pinnacles, featuring 2-light louvres on the cardinal sides, topped by a spire with lucarnes. The four-bay nave has clerestory windows with two round-headed lights and hollow spandrels. The buttressed aisles contain large arched 3-light windows with alternating intersecting tracery. The south chapel has two similar windows with Perpendicular tracery and another in its east gable wall. The west window of the nave and the east window of the chancel each have five lights but feature different tracery designs.
Inside, the church has a four-bay nave arcade supported by short octagonal columns with moulded caps and a coved wooden ceiling. There is a carved wooden reredos in Gothic style with a coved canopy and pinnacles. The west window features geometrical-leaded clear glazing with three stained glass insets, including a coat of arms and two shields with boar heads, which are said to be associated with Barton Old Hall.
