Description
Hollowforth Aqueduct Bridge Number 38 is an aqueduct or under-bridge that carries the Lancaster Canal over New Mill Brook. Built in the 1790s by engineer John Rennie, it is constructed from rock-faced sandstone. The bridge features three fully elliptical stone pipes, approximately 3 metres high and 4 metres wide, each with rusticated rock-faced voussoirs. A flat coping runs down on the curved outer abutments. This structure represents an unusual and ingenious engineering solution to the challenge of maintaining shallow clearance of the canal over the brook.
