Description
Barton Cross is a re-erected cross dated 1901, situated on the base of a former cross that may date back to the late medieval period. The base measures approximately 2 meters square and is made of large slabs, featuring a large cubic block, likely part of a cheese press, with a tapered block on top that forms the pedestal for a simple stone cross. On the north side of the pedestal, there is a square stone with a hollowed center, which may serve as the footstone for the original shaft. The pedestal is inscribed on the north side, indicating that the cross was re-erected by Councillor R. Myerscough of Preston in 1901. This cross is located at the junction of an old track aligned on a north-south axis.
