4/3 Barton Cross

II

Re-erected cross, dated 1901, on base of former cross which may be late medieval. Base c.2 metres square, of large slabs, a large cubic block (probably part of a cheese press) with a tapered block on top of it forming the pedestal to a simple stone cross. On the base on the north side of the pedestal is a square stone with hollowed centre which may be the footstone for the original shaft. The pedestal is lettered on the north side, stating that the cross was re-erected by Councillor R. Myerscough of Preston in 1901. The item is sited at the junction of an old track on a north-south axis.
