Description
This barn, located approximately 50 metres north of Harrock Hall, is likely from the 16th century with some alterations made in the 18th century. It features a cruck frame with sandstone rubble walls and a shingle roof. The west wall includes breathers, a cart entrance sheltered by a canopy with cheeks, and a wider shippon end on the right with a doorway. On the left, there is an addition that has a wide doorway with plain reveals.
Projecting from the east side is a shippon wing, probably built in the early 18th century. Both the north and south walls of this wing have three chamfered doorways on the ground floor and three pitching eyes with plain stone surrounds above. The east gable features three pitching eyes and a pair of blocked doorways at the upper level, which have chamfered surrounds and canted heads, accessible via external stone steps.
Inside, the barn has seven bays. The end cruck trusses, now located internally, are closed with blades that terminate at collars; the original roof was likely thatched and half-hipped. The other crucks are connected by yokes below the apex and also have collars. Some wall posts remain, connected to the blades by spurs. At the junction with the rear shippon wing, part of the original timber-framed walling is still visible, including two doorheads. The first floor has been removed from the rear wing, which features two bolted king-post trusses.
