Description
Anderton's School House, a cottage located to the north of Hampsons Cottage, dates from the 17th century or earlier and has been altered over time. It features a cruck-framed structure with a colour-washed roughcast finish on brick or stone, a plinth, and a tiled roof with boarded eaves. A brick chimney is situated at the right gable. The cottage has two small bays and is a single storey. There is a small modern porch in the center, with two windows to the left and one to the right, all of which are modern casements with 2, 1, and 3 lights. A small flat-roofed extension at the left end is not included in the listing. Inside, there is a full cruck truss made of large scantling, featuring dorsals and large curved windbraces supporting overlapped purlins. The housepart is located in the second bay, while the first bay has been partitioned; otherwise, the interior has been altered. This cottage is now a very rare survival of a building type that was once widespread in the area.
