Description
George Cottage is a detached cottage, originally a public house, likely dating from the 17th century with substantial alterations in the 18th century and later additions. It probably began as a cruck-framed building, with later 18th-century brick and flint walls, colourwashed except on the front elevation. The roof is thatched and half-hipped.
The cottage is single-storey with an attic and has four bays. It has modern timber casement windows; bay 4 has a 2-light window, while the others are 3-light. A 2-light window is located in the attic, above bay 3. A projecting timber and glazed porch with a brick and flint base and a hipped thatched roof is situated between bays 3 and 4. The west gable is rendered and plain, while the east gable features an angled bay window with a felted flat roof and a 2-light casement above. A projection matching the east-end bay extends from the rear elevation, followed by a mid-20th century extension with a felted flat roof and timber casement windows.
Internally, the cottage is relatively plain. The central room clearly displays the cruck truss between bays 2 and 3, along with the associated wind bracing to the original purlins. The original collar beam has been removed, replaced by a larger, more modern beam at a lower level.
