Description
Memorial Hall is an assembly hall that was formerly a Methodist chapel, built in 1817 with a rear extension added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and slate and has a symmetrical appearance on the front and sides, giving it a two-storey look. The front (north) features three windows and a hipped roof behind a parapet. There is a raised center section that contains a cement panel, topped with stone coping and a stone moulded cornice. The red brickwork is laid in Flemish bond and includes three full-height recesses with arched tops, arched openings, stone cills, and a plain stone band at the first floor level within the recesses. The windows are sash style. The doorway is adorned with reeded plasterwork and simple caps that extend around the arched opening, which features a decorative fanlight above a pair of three-panelled doors. The side elevations consist of three bays and have a similar design, with cambered arches; however, the upper openings have been filled in. At the rear, there is a late 19th-century cross wing that is lower in height and projects beyond the square shape of the original structure. This wing has a slate roof, small round-headed openings, and walls that are decorated with blue brick patterns.
