Higher House With Attached Cottage

This is a 1725-dated farmhouse with an attached cottage, now used as a house and cottage. It was altered subsequently. The farmhouse is built of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, and originally had a roof of stone slates, now replaced with stone-coloured tiles. It follows a T-shaped plan, with a double-depth, two-bay layout and a projecting porch in the centre. The farmhouse is two storeys high and largely symmetrical, except for the size of the windows. The two-storey porch has a central doorway with a chamfered surround and a segmental lintel, designed to look like massive stone voussoirs, above which is a datestone inscribed ITW. The porch also has a two-light window on the first floor, gable copings with kneelers, and an apex chimney displaying the date 1725. All windows have recessed chamfered mullions and hoodmoulds, with four lights to each, except for the ground floor window on the left, which has six. Chimneys are present on both original gables, and the right gable has gable copings with kneelers. To the left of the farmhouse is a single-bay cottage, under a continued roof of stone slates. This cottage has a 20th-century gabled porch that incorporates a doorway from Extwistle Hall, a four-light window to the left, and two two-light windows above. These windows are similar to those on the farmhouse but lack hoodmoulds. Moulded gutter brackets and a ridge chimney are also present. The interiors have been altered. A barn formerly attached to the north end of the building, has now been converted and is not included in this listing.
