Description

The gateway and wall to the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, built around 1846-1849, are likely designed by Weightman and Hadfield. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the boundary wall encloses all four sides of the rectangular churchyard and extends approximately 150 meters eastward to the junction with Habergham Lodge. The wall stands about 2 meters high and features a pitched coping. At the west end, there is a small arched recess, approximately 0.5 meters high and wide, which was once a drinking trough for horses that had made the climb from Padiham. The entrance archway, located opposite the church tower, has a steep segmental arch with a moulded surround and a pitched parapet topped with an apex cross, although the former cast-iron gates have been removed. This structure forms a group with the Church of All Saints and Habergham Lodge.
