Description

No. 487 on Padiham Road is a former master's house for a school that has been converted into a private dwelling. The building dates back to 1840, as indicated by the date above the doorway. It has undergone alterations and renovations, with the original school buildings at both ends and the rear being demolished and partly rebuilt. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone, with the rear featuring random rubble, and it has a stone slate roof.

Designed in the Jacobean style, it has a double-depth, double-fronted plan, standing two stories tall with three almost symmetrical windows. The façade includes a coved gutter cornice and a central Tudor-arched doorway with a square-headed reveal, featuring a restored Tudor-panelled door and an overlight with three arched panes. Above the doorway is a small datestone with raised lettering that reads "JS / 1840," referring to Janet Shuttleworth. There are also two restored two-light mullioned windows on each floor, all fitted with restored sashed glazing and hood-moulds. The building has cut-down gable chimneys.

To the left, there is a 20th-century single-storey wing that replaced the former school range, and to the right, a rebuilt single-storey wing. The interior has not been inspected. The school was established by Janet Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall in collaboration with the Dugdale family, who were involved in calico printing and cotton manufacturing.
