Description
The terrace wall forming the north boundary to the garden of Gawthorpe Hall, overlooking the River Calder, was built around 1850-1860, likely designed by Sir Charles Barry. It is constructed of ashlar stone and sits atop a retaining wall made of sandstone blocks. The wall stretches approximately 110 metres from east to west, with the central third curving outward to create a semi-circular formal garden directly behind the house. The ends of the wall curve inward to form ornamental benches. The parapet, which has a battered outer face, is adorned with Jacobean-style finials.
