Description

This house, located on Orrell Road, dates to 1820. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with returns in dressed stone, and has a slate roof. The house is two storeys high and features three bays. A sill band runs along the first floor, and the top of the building is defined by a frieze cornice and a deep parapet. A raised central panel displays an oval cartouche bearing the inscription "J & E ATHERTON/1755/W. ATHERTON/FECIT/1820", accompanied by the inscription "DEI PROVIDENTIA HEREDITAS NOSTRA." The windows are casements. The entrance has a 20th-century canopy and door. The building has brick gable-end stacks. The group value context is that the building contributes to the character of its surroundings.
