Description
The Mount Public House is an early 19th-century building that was originally a house. It is constructed of stone, with an extension of stucco and stone dressings, and features hipped roofs. The structure is three stories high with a three-bay center flanked by two-story, two-bay bowed wings, and a further recessed two-story bay to the left. There is a band over the ground floor and a cornice above the first floor, with blocking courses on the wings. The attic also has a cornice. Most windows are sashed with glazing bars, although some ground-floor windows have been altered. A plain central open porch, likely added later, is present. The right side of the building has five bays, with the three-bay center breaking forward under a pediment. The central porch features Tuscan columns, a pulvinated frieze in the entablature, and round-headed openings on the sides. The interior has been altered since 1986, so it was only partially inspected; one hall is reported to have been removed along with some fireplaces. The remaining hall has an enriched barrel-vaulted ceiling, an open-well stair with iron balusters, and some six-panel doors. In the early 19th century, the building was used by exiled French Benedictine nuns.
