Description

4 and 6 School Lane are a pair of cottages, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations and enlargements over time. They are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and some brick, topped with stone slate roofs and featuring brick chimneys. The cottages have a single-depth main range with paired back extensions of varying ages.

The buildings are two stories high and have an irregular three-window arrangement. No. 6 includes a 20th-century porch on the right side, with a vertical-rectangular window above it featuring a 20th-century casement. There are two similar windows to the left and another window above the first of these, all with thin rectangular lintels. No. 4, located to the right, has one similar window on each floor and a 20th-century porch at the right-hand gable. A ridge chimney is positioned at the junction of the two cottages, with a gable chimney to the left. The upper part of the right-hand gable wall of No. 4 is made of brick and includes a stone two-light mullioned window.

At the rear, No. 6 has a short rear wing that appears older than the front range, also two stories high, featuring a doorway in the angle and a three-light chamfered mullion window to the left of the doorway, along with an altered window above. No. 4 has a larger rear wing made of brick. The interior is understood to retain remnants of cruck framing.
