Description

The entrance gateway to Mesnes Park, dated 1878, features gate piers and gates made of sandstone ashlar and cast iron. The square gate piers include an inner pair that are banded and adorned with pulvinated friezes, moulded cornices, and large ball finials. The outer piers are plain but have moulded cornices and blocking courses. The central double gates are designed with twisted dogbars and intricate openwork featuring Jacobean motifs, each gate displaying a roundel with the Wigan shield and the date 1878. There are also pedestrian side gates that follow a similar style.
