Description

The Griffin Hotel is a public house dated 1905, designed by Heaton and Ralph of Wigan. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, with dressings of red and buff terracotta, and features a hipped green slate roof. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with three symmetrical bays. The ground floor is faced with square tiles and topped with a moulded cornice. The outer bays of the upper floors are adorned with giant Ionic semi-columns, which are banded in buff and red, and have modillioned semicircular pediments. The central bay on the ground floor features a wide splayed segmental archway with a keystone and Vitruvian scroll enrichment on the lintel, which is inscribed with "19" on the left and "05" on the right. This archway contains a depressed-arched doorway framed by panelled pilasters. The outer bays each have a pair of transomed rectangular windows with pilastered surrounds, divided triple keystones, engraved plate-glass, and brattished transoms. Above the doorway, there is a prominent wrought-iron bracket with a lamp.

On the first floor, the central bay has a transomed three-light window framed by terracotta columns and a cornice with a curved upstand inscribed "OB LD." To the left of this window is a large wrought-iron bracket with scrolled enrichment, displaying a large signboard painted with a griffin, along with a white-tiled frieze that reads "GRIFFIN HOTEL." The building also features a prominent modillioned eaves cornice, above which is a flat-roofed three-light dormer. The outer bays of the pediment have segmental three-light oriels on the first floor, with brattished transoms, casement windows, and shaped parapets. The second floor has two-light sash windows. The Griffin Hotel is a notable example of its type and date. The interior has not been inspected.
