Description
The Church of St George is a church built in 1781, which was damaged by fire in 1980 and restored in 1988. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a rendered plinth, topped with a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a short rectangular apse and is designed in the Georgian style.
The exterior features a gable facing the road and consists of two storeys and three bays arranged symmetrically. The broad central bay projects slightly and is finished with a shaped gable that is topped by a bellcote. The façade includes a scored stucco plinth, sillbands on both floors, a triglyph frieze, and a modillioned cornice linking the outer bays with a band across the centre. The central bay has a semi-elliptical headed blank arch that contains an open-pedimented Tuscan doorcase. This doorcase is framed by engaged columns and features a round-headed doorway with imposts and a keystone, along with renewed double doors and a fanlight with radiating metal tracery. Above the door, there is a round-headed niche at the first floor and a square panel in the gable displaying the cross of St John. The rebuilt bellcote has scrolled supporters and a small round-headed opening with imposts and a keystone. Each of the flanking bays has one keyed round-headed window at the first floor. The four-bay side walls also have similar round-headed windows on both floors. The apse features a tall round-headed window with a moulded architrave and keystone.
The interior has not been inspected, but the rector of Wigan reports that it was entirely gutted by fire, with none of the original features remaining. However, the new arrangements are described as "very interesting."
