Description

St John's Club is a building that likely started as a school and has been used as a club since around 1900. It was constructed around 1820 and has been altered since then. The building is made of handmade red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a sandstone plinth and dressings, and has a hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street, forming the south side of a passageway leading to the Church of St John.

The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical façade with a layout of 1:3:1 windows. The central section is highlighted by a pedimented three-bay design, complete with a plinth, a first-floor sill band, a moulded cornice, and a pediment. The centre features a large round-headed doorway, which is accessed by two steps with nosings. This doorway includes a set-in wooden doorcase with slender semi-columns and an entablature adorned with triglyphs and guttae, a six-panel door, and a blocked fanlight that replaced a former metal radial fanlight.

Both floors of the building have sashed windows with raised sills and wedge lintels. Most of the windows are unhorned and consist of 12 panes, although there are some 4-paned windows on the first floor of the first bay and on both floors of the fifth bay. There is a one-bay extension to the left that features a 4-pane sashed window on the first floor only. The right-hand side of the building, which faces the street, has the entrance to the club.

The interior of the building has not been inspected. St John's Club is part of a group with the Church of St John and the Walmesley monument located in front of the church.
