Description

The Walmesley Monument, located in front of the Church of St John, is a commemorative cross dated 1852, believed to be designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. It honors Charles and Elizabeth Walmesley. The monument is made of sandstone and is set on three square steps. It features a square pedestal with a dedicatory inscription, a square shaft with roll-moulded corners, and shields and symbols of the Evangelists at the base. At the top, there are figures of the Virgin and St John on corbels, along with a crocketed gablet. This monument is part of a group that includes the Church of St John and No. 93, St John's Club.
