Description
Dunham Town War Memorial is a First World War memorial dating from around 1930, designed by an unknown creator. It is made of buff sandstone and is located in the churchyard of St Mark’s parish church, to the south of the church and directly opposite the lychgate.
The memorial features a simple square-section cross with slightly flared arms and a laurel wreath carved between them. It stands on a short, slightly tapered plinth that has moulding at its base. This plinth rests on a square base, which has ogee chamfers that create an octagonal upper surface. An incised inscription runs around the octagonal frieze just below the top, stating: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR'.
The south face of the memorial includes the dates 1914 and 1918, along with the names of 14 individuals who fell during the First World War, listed alphabetically and without rank. The west face bears the dates 1939 and 1945, along with the names of five individuals who fell during the Second World War, with one name presented in a different lettering style. The base is set upon a square step.
