Description

ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE NEWMARKET ROAD SD 90 SW (south side)

1/23 Taunton Hall 12/01/67 (formerly listed as Taunton Hall including forecourt. wall and gatepiers)

II

House. C18, C19 and C20 structure which conceals timber- framed crosswalls of C17 and earlier. Rendered walls with graduated stone slate roof. 3 bays and 2 storeys with a wing which projects to the rear. Picturesque C19 porch between bays 2 and 3. C19 and C20 window openings some of which, on the front, have eared architrave surrounds with rosettes moulded in the lintel. Bay 1 projects slightly. Bow window to rear. Ridge chimney stack in brick. The timber-framing of the 2 principal crosswalls remains largely intact as do some of the chamfered floor beams with stepped stops. A tie-beam and collar cruck truss with wattle and daub panelling forms the party wall to No. 169 (q.v.). It is completely visible right to the apex of the roof and makes a notable feature. The wing which projects to the rear also retains original floor and roof structures (possibly of C17).
