Description
Taunton Hall is a house that has elements from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries but conceals timber-framed crosswalls from the 17th century and earlier. The building has rendered walls and a graduated stone slate roof. It features three bays and two storeys, with a wing that projects to the rear. A picturesque 19th-century porch is located between the second and third bays. The window openings from the 19th and 20th centuries include some on the front that have eared architrave surrounds with rosettes moulded in the lintel. The first bay projects slightly, and there is a bow window at the rear. A ridge chimney stack is made of brick. The timber-framing of the two main crosswalls is largely intact, as are some of the stop-chamfered floor beams with run-out stops. A tie-beam and collar cruck truss with wattle and daub panelling forms the party wall to No. 169 and is completely visible up to the apex of the roof, making it a notable feature. The rear wing also retains original floor and roof structures, possibly from the 17th century.
