Description
Black Cottage is a house dating from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It is constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarding, and rendering, topped with a peg-tiled mansard roof that features a dormer. The building has a T-plan layout, with a single storey and attic at the north end and a two-storey gabled cross-wing at the south end. A 20th-century gabled porch with a panelled door is present, along with a projecting stack at the north end. All windows are 20th-century casements with leaded diamond panes.
Inside, the cross-wing reveals 16th-century framing, with peg holes indicating regular studding and window breaks at both the front and back. The main range has exposed 17th-century floor joists and late 17th-century walling. The mansard roof features rafters that are butted and tenoned up to the purlin level, but are laid on (possibly nailed) above. Two heavy posts in the north end wall may have supported an earlier timber-framed chimney before the current 18th-century one. There are also 20th-century lean-to structures and additions at the rear of the cross-wing.
