Description

The Black Mill is a 19th-century steam mill, later converted into a house, located in Navestock. The building is timber-framed with softwood, primarily braced construction, and is clad in weatherboards, with a slate roof. It is two storeys high with attics. A central wrought-iron weather vane is present. All gables feature ornamental barge boards, and the north gable of the main block has a projecting gabled hoist loft. The upper floor remains unaltered. A lower gabled wing projects from the main block at the east end. A long, single-storey range of weatherboarded outbuildings with pantiled roofs extends around a yard to the east. Internally, two cast-iron stanchions support the first floor; these are said to have originally been a single stanchion, later cut in half. The mill forms a group with the adjacent granary.
