Description
Birchinley Hall Farmhouse dates to 1619, as inscribed on the door lintel. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof. The house follows a three-unit hearth-passage plan, with the left and right ends projecting as gabled crosswings. Quoins are present. A slightly projecting porch is located in the left crosswing, featuring chamfered inner and outer door surrounds and seats. The outer doorway has an elliptical head, with recessed spandrels and the inscription "ACICI619RKACRB," which references Alexander Collinge, Joan Collinge, Robert Kay, Alexander C., and Robert Butterworth. The front features mullion windows with double-chamfered cavetto-moulded surrounds: four, five, and four lights on the ground floor, and three, three, and four lights on the first floor. A window was inserted in the 20th century. Most windows have hoodmoulds. A 20th-century ridge chimney stack is visible. Similar windows, including a fire window and stair light, are found on the sides and rear. A dressed, chamfered door surround can be found at the rear of the cross passage. A 20th-century addition is on the right-hand return, which formerly had a projecting chimney stack. Inside, there is an inglenook with a chamfered bressumer beam on a spire post. The principal beams are chamfered with stepped stops. The floor and roof structures were largely replaced around 1985. Fireplaces with chamfered surrounds are present on both the ground and first floors. Evidence suggests a possible second inglenook fireplace at the service end, indicated by smoke blackening and a possible fire window.
