Description

Birchinley Manor Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed house dating from 1632, with the date "EAM? 1632" found on a finial and "1631" on a door lintel. The farmhouse features hammer-dressed stone and a graduated stone slate roof. It has a three-unit hearth-passage plan and two storeys, with quoins and projecting cross wings. The right cross wing has been largely rebuilt but incorporates the 1631 lintel. The left wing features a recessed porch with seats, a chamfered Tudor-arched inner door surround, and a moulded outer door surround with a basket-headed lintel and recessed spandrels. It also has two 5-light ovolo-moulded double-chamfered mullion windows and a similar 4-light window that turns the angle, all beneath a continuous hoodmould. There is a similar 8-light house-part window, although one mullion is missing, and a 3-light window above it. The farmhouse has a projecting gable chimney stack with two diagonally set shafts, a ridge chimney stack, and two gargoyles. The gables are coped with kneelers that have finials at the rear, and the apex finial is dated. While the right cross wing has lost much of its character due to rebuilding, the rear of the house retains more original features, including a 5-light angle window and a coped gable with kneelers. The rear also has a door with a square-cut surround, flanked by 5 and 4-light double-chamfered mullion windows, as well as 4, 2, and 3-light windows on the first floor. The interior has been significantly altered but still retains original chamfered beams. This building showcases many unusual and delightful features.
