Description
Higher Windy Bank is a farmhouse and adjoining barn, dating from the late 17th century with alterations from the 18th century and a 19th-century barn. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The farmhouse is a two-bay, two-storey structure with the barn located to the right. It has quoins and a projecting plinth. The central porch includes a cyma-moulded door surround, an obtuse-angled lintel, and a coped parapet with corner dies, which is similar to the band at Old Bent House, dated 1691 and built by Joseph Buckley.
The right bay of the farmhouse is obscured by a later outshut addition that contains one and three-light flat-faced windows. The left bay features a four-light flat-faced mullion window on each floor, although one light is blocked. It also retains a hoodmould from a former 17th-century window. The gable chimney stacks are set diagonally, with the right one projecting. The right gable has two double-chamfered, two-light windows. The rear of the farmhouse, which has raised eaves, is obscured by a large addition.
The barn is built from watershot stone and includes a round-headed cart entry, a segmental-headed shippon door, and various other door and window openings.
