Description
Rough Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse with later additions. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a graduated stone slate roof. The building features a 2-bay single-depth plan with two storeys and includes a later barn to the left, which has lean-to additions at the front and rear. The farmhouse has quoins and a projecting plinth. The entrance door is flanked by a 4-light chamfered mullion window, although two of its mullions are missing. On the first floor, there are two 2-light windows, also with missing mullions. The lean-to addition obscures the rear ground floor, but the first floor has two 3-light windows; one has flat-faced mullions while the other is chamfered. A small window with an arched lintel is hidden by a brick addition. The barn is built from watershot stone and features a cart entry that is no longer visible, as well as a later opening in the gable. This farmhouse was formerly used as a toll house for the Rochdale-Halifax turnpike road before the road was diverted.
