Description
Lock No. 23, also known as Lime Kiln Lock, along with the adjoining tailbridge No. 75 and aqueduct No. 74, is located on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Saddleworth. It was constructed between 1794 and 1799, designed by engineer Benjamin Outram. The lock features hammer-dressed stone and has a single upper gate and double lower gates. It is grooved for stop planks and includes a boatman's ladder that was added during the 1984 restoration. The walls of the lock display several stonemason's marks.
The tailbridge at the lower end of the lock has an elliptical arch, with a parapet wall that includes a stone band and round-topped copings. This parapet is terminated by a square pier at one end and slopes down to the towpath level at the other end. The aqueduct at the higher end of the lock features a skew-segmental arch span, battered side walls with a stone band and coping, and battered square piers that flank the arch and terminate the walls.
