Description

Uppermill Viaduct, also known as Uppermill Arches and Saddleworth Viaduct, is a railway viaduct built in 1849 by A S Jee for the Huddersfield and Manchester Railway Company. Constructed of rock-faced stone, the viaduct features a total of 23 semi-circular arches, each with rusticated voussoirs. These arches are supported by rectangular piers that have projecting plinths and springing bands. Notably, three of the arches, numbered 9, 15, and 21 from the south, are skew and flanked by flat pilasters. Before its completion, the viaduct was already part of the London and North Western Railway.
