Description

Brownhill Bridge Mill is a water-powered woollen mill, now serving as a workshop and house, built in 1772 with later additions and alterations. The structure is made of hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a slate and graduated stone slate roof. It has three storeys and four bays, with the original mill occupying the right-hand bay. On the ground floor, there is a segmental-headed tail-race opening and a 3-light window to the right. The first floor has a 12-light window with a door inserted to the left, while the second floor features a 13-light window. All windows are recessed flat-faced mullion windows with king mullions. The right gable and rear of the building have been significantly rebuilt, with rectangular windows that have stone lintels and sills. The mill was extended to the left, likely in the late 18th century, and again at the rear in the 20th century. Each bay on the ground and first floors has 2, 3, and 4-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows, and large vented openings were added to the second floor in the 20th century when the mill was used as a tannery. Inside, there are king-post roof trusses and remnants of a winch mechanism. The mill was initially used for teasing and then for scribbling, continuing wool processing until the mid-20th century and was powered by a water-wheel until the 1920s.
