Description

The former County Grammar School, now part of Bolton Metropolitan College, was built in 1897. It is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings and a slate roof. The building comprises three parallel ranges and has a nine-window front. A segmental pedimented porch is located to the left of the centre, featuring an arched doorway with decorated spandrels and a round arched overlight, with mosaic lettering above the windows. The ground floor features mullioned and transomed windows, with similar windows above, including a tripartite window to the left of the central bay, and an oriel window to the right of the entrance. A pierced parapet runs between the gables. The central gable has a Palladian window on the second storey and a cupola on the roof to the rear. The outer gables have paired three-light mullioned windows and a Palladian window in the upper storey. The interior was not inspected. Cast-iron railings and gates with banded gate piers mark the original boys’ and girls’ entrances on the return elevations.
