Description
Bradlegh Old Hall is a farmhouse dating back to the late 16th century, possibly with earlier origins, but encased in brickwork during the late 18th century. It is built of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern to the front, set on a sandstone plinth with flush stone quoins. The east gable wall and the rear are pebbledashed, while the west gable wall is slate-hung. The roof is covered in stone-slates with coped gables.
The house has two storeys plus attics, with three windows across the front. It has four-pane flush sashes with wedge lintels and painted sandstone cills. The front door consists of three oak boards secured by ornate wrought iron hinges, the lower hinge being decayed. Three hipped dormers each contain a four-pane sash window. Flush gable chimneys are present.
A rear wing of similar character extends from the main building, and there’s a single-storey brick lean-to against the west gable.
Inside, the right and left front parlours feature altered inglenooks, stop-chamfered beams and doors of three oak boards; the door to the right parlour is fitted with good wrought iron hinges. An early 18th century oak staircase, featuring two turned balusters per step, leads to the second storey and attics. Painted eight-panelled oak doors are found on the second storey. In a rear right bedroom is a probably 16th century deeply moulded reused oak beam. In the left attic, carved into the front purlin in raised lettering, is the inscription: "MAISTER DOTH AND MISTRESS BOTH ACCORDE WITH GODLY MINDES AND ZEALOUS HARTES TO SERVE THE LIVING LORDE. ANNO 1597. HENRY WESLEY.”
