Description

Gatesheath Hall is a farmhouse dating to the late 17th century, with substantial alterations in the mid-18th century and further additions in the early 19th and early 20th centuries. It is constructed of Flemish bond orange brick with buff stone dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof and featuring five brick chimneys, one lateral at the rear. The house has a double-pile plan.

The south front is symmetrical with three bays over three storeys. It features rusticated quoins and a moulded stone cornice. The end bays have two-light iron casements with Gothic tracery under channelled flat stone heads, and three-light casements under similar heads in the top storey. The central bay has a simple, detached stone porch with a wooden doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and panelled reveals, containing a six-panelled door. Above the door is a window with a pointed head and tracery, and a two-light casement above. A bay to the left is of 17th-century origin, with English bond brickwork and a band at the first floor, featuring three-light casements with applied Gothic glazing. A three-bay addition is evident to the left.

The interior retains a two-room 17th-century layout, with heavy chamfered ceiling beams and a central fireplace with wooden lintels. A softwood classical, semi-circular headed entrance leads to the stairway, incorporating turned mahogany balusters. Features include six-panelled doors and an inscription "EL 1711" over a fireplace (which is not original). Shutters are operated by sashes. A former square dovecote, originally with a pyramidal roof, has been incorporated into the rear of the house as a bathroom.
