Description

Tushingham House is a farmhouse dating back to 1680, substantially rebuilt in the early 19th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brown brick with a grey slate roof. The house is symmetrical in design, with three storeys and three windows. It has a double-depth plan and a rear wing dating from the early 19th century. Architectural features include a plinth, a band at the first floor, a moulded eaves cornice, and flush stone quoins. The front door consists of six pecked fielded panels, topped by a looped radial-bar fanlight, set within an opening with flush quoins, an entablature on consoles, and an inscription reading D:16TM80. A late 19th-century semi-octagonal bay window with five lights and two-pane French windows flanks the door. The second storey has a twelve-pane sash window at the centre and sixteen-pane sash windows to either side. The third storey mirrors this layout, with a six-pane sash at the centre and eight-pane sash windows on each side. Flush gable chimneys are present.

Inside, the house features six-panel doors, a basket-arch between the hall and stair, and an altered inglenook in the rear right room. An oak staircase rises one flight per storey. While the floors and ceilings were cased around 1820, subsequent electrical work in the late 20th century revealed broad oak boarding in the floors and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
