Description

Bell Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse, dated 1765 as indicated by a rainwater head inscribed with the initials TVB. Later alterations and additions were made in the mid and late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with fletton brick additions, and has Welsh slate roofs with three rebuilt gable stacks. It has a plinth and cogged eaves, and is arranged over two storeys with a roughly L-shaped plan. The symmetrical front elevation features a central fluted doorcase with a canopy supported by brackets, leading to a fielded six-panel door with a mullioned overlight. Above the door is a two-light window, and to either side are three-light windows. The rear wing incorporates lean-to additions to the south and west, with 20th-century window openings.

The interior features a central hallway containing an 18th-century staircase with double turned balusters, a turned newel, and a heavy moulded handrail. The front rooms on the ground floor have two-panel doors and span beams; the beam on the left is cased, and the one on the right is chamfered, with a principal fireplace. A cupboard is built into the left beam, and the right beam features a 18th-century fireplace. A rear left door has a two-panel door, chamfered joists and a corner fireplace. A main room in the rear wing has three span beams, with the central beam having run-out stops. A front room on the first floor to the left also has a two-panel door and an 18th-century fireplace. Another room on the first floor has a chamfered span beam and exposed joists. Other rooms have beaded board doors. The attic space has a double-purlin roof and is divided by stud and board partitions approximately 6 feet high.
