Description
The gatehouse to Bradlegh Old Hall, dating from around 1460, is a ruined structure made of red and yellow sandstone. It features a 4-centred arch in yellow stone, which previously had a large blank arch above it, though this is now unclear. The archway has canted, moulded jambs that are flanked by colonnettes. Inside the archway, there are stone seats on each side of an embrasure, with loops that overlook the moat. The springers suggest the former presence of a quadripartite vault. Massive decayed diagonal buttresses in red sandstone are located at the front corners, designed as octagonal mock-turrets. Some details in the yellow sandstone indicate early 19th-century restoration. A modern earth causeway provides access across the moat.
