Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a church founded in 1606 and rebuilt in 1716, with a south aisle added by E.J. Dod in 1939. It is constructed of stone-dressed brick and features a grey slate roof for the nave and a copper roof for the aisle. The building includes a west tower, a simple nave, a south aisle, and a small apsidal chancel. The three-stage tower has circular windows on the lower stage, a clock, round-arched bell openings, a simple cornice with ball finials, and an ornate weather vane. The south porch, which is attached to the tower, has a keystone inscribed with "Built 1716," although the porch itself was rebuilt in 1939.

The nave consists of five bays and has round-headed Y-tracery windows on the north side. The south aisle features similar windows along with two-light square-headed windows in the clerestory. The chancel has two round-arched windows. Inside, there is a Tuscan south arcade designed by Dod in 1939, a simple round chancel arch, and hammer-beam nave trusses that include iron rods for tension. The church contains 20th-century armigerous glass and preserves fragments of 17th-century church materials in the apse. When inspected in 1984, the church was undergoing major repairs and strengthening due to damage caused by coal-mining subsidence.
