Description

Pickett-Hamilton Fort, built around 1940, is located on the former RAF Burtonwood Airfield, which became a USAAF base in June 1942. The fort was relocated to its current position in 2019.

The fort is constructed of concrete and steel and has a circular plan. Its exterior has been altered due to the relocation, revealing more of the structure than originally intended. The outer concrete cylinder, which would have been mostly underground with only the top visible, is now only partially sunk, exposing the eastern side completely. The inner concrete cylinder is fully above ground and features three horizontal rectangular loopholes along with an overhanging circular concrete slab lid. This lid includes an offset manhole with a steel cover.

Inside, the fort retains a central hydraulic jack and the original pump mechanism, although these are no longer operational. They have been sand blasted and painted for preservation. Surrounding the hydraulic jack is a concrete firing platform where personnel would have stood to use the loopholes. It is uncertain if the original metal rungs, which were set into the outer cylinder wall for access, still exist.

The modern gambion cages and hard-surface viewing area in front of the fort are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest. However, any works that might affect the character of the listed building still require listed building consent, which is a matter for the local planning authority to determine.
