Description
This is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse, originally part of the Bold Hall Estate, which included a now-demolished main house. It was likely designed by Giacomo Leoni and built for Peter Bold, a Member of Parliament for Wigan. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar sandstone dressings, a hipped roof, and ashlar stacks on the front and rear roof slopes.
The building has a rectangular plan, and was enlarged in the late 19th century with single-story extensions. It was likely intended as part of a larger complex, with the nearby former stable range being a key component.
The north elevation, which faced the former stable courtyard, is symmetrical with three bays over two stories. It features paired doorways in the centre, a narrow light above the entrance, and tall windows on either side. The upper floor has three windows set on a narrow sill band. Window and door openings have quoined surrounds and channelled heads with integral keystones. Modern windows and doors are present throughout. There is an overhanging eaves cornice, and tall ashlar chimneys rise from the front roof slope. The south elevation, facing the site of the former main hall, has a similar layout, but includes an advanced centre bay beneath a pediment and a late 19th-century single-story addition to the right. The east elevation has one ground-floor window, while the west elevation features a 20th-century porch on the right, a blocked door to the left, and a single upper-floor window above the staircase.
The interior has not been inspected.
The farmhouse forms a group with the aforementioned former stable range.
