Description
Alport Cottage is a former infants' school that has been converted into a dwelling. It forms the north wing of Alport's School, which is a symmetrical building alongside The Old School House and Alport House, built in 1833. The cottage is constructed of red-brown brick and topped with a grey slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features two bays. The front is designed to match Alport House, although the brick is a deeper red and the parapet base is slightly lower. Above the door, there is a stone plaque inscribed with "MALPAS OLD INFANT SCHOOL ERECTED AD MDCCCXXXIII." The building has a ridge chimney and a chimney on the rear gable. The open north side includes two casement windows set under cambered arches. The stone-coped rear gable has dentilled verges and a blank camber-arched recess. The interior has not been inspected. Alport Cottage, along with The Old School House and Alport House, represents an unusual and attractive example of a school built and extended in a unified style between 1745 and 1833.
