Description

Taylor's Almshouses is a row of six almshouses built in 1854 in Malpas, Cheshire. Constructed of Flemish bond brown brickwork with a graded grey slate roof, the building is symmetrical and one storey in height. A central front gable features a shield-shaped stone inscribed with "IN USUM PAUPERUM A MARIA TAYLOR MDCCCLIV" (For the Use of the Poor, by Maria Taylor, 1854). There are three recessed porches, each serving two almshouses. Originally, each dwelling contained one room at the front and one at the rear; these have since been modified to include bathrooms. The doorways are boarded. Each dwelling has a single two-pane casement window at the front, featuring a wedge lintel and projecting cill of red sandstone. Shaped bargeboards adorn the gables. Three brick chimneys, each with two diagonal flues, are plinthed. The rear of the building was altered in the mid-20th century, but the alterations were sympathetic to the original design. The interiors were not inspected as part of the listing process.
