Description

The Old School House, dating from 1745, was formerly the centerpiece of Alport School and is now a dwelling. It features Flemish bond brown brickwork and a grey slate roof, with projecting wings. The building is two stories high and has three bays. A red sandstone plinth supports the structure, while four plain brick pilasters divide the facade into three panels. There is a three-course brick band at the first floor and a dentilled three-course brick band below a brick parapet that consists of six panels with moulded stone coping. The entrance has a nailed boarded door on old wrought iron hinges, flanked by replaced six-pane casements. On the upper storey, there are four-pane replaced casements on each side. At the center, there is a slightly recessed stone plaque inscribed with "The Charity of Richard Alport late of Overton in this Parish, Esquire, 1745," above a shield bearing six bells. The plaque, door, and window openings are all set under flat gauged brick arches with keystones. The stone-coped end gables have projecting brick chimneys with one-course bands and replaced caps made of three courses of blue brick. The interior has been significantly altered during its conversion to a dwelling but retains three ogee-stopped chamfered main beams of oak from the former school hall and a dogleg stair with shaped splat balusters, which appear to be about 50 years older than the datestone.
