Description
Drake’s Cottage and Drake’s House are a pair of houses dating to 1768, as indicated by the rainwater heads, with alterations made in the 19th century. They are constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with a graded grey slate roof. The symmetrical front elevation is of two storeys, plus attics with windows in the end gables, and features four windows in total. An oak boarded door is present at Drake’s Cottage (on the left), while the door to Drake’s House has been replaced. Both doors are set within open gabled porches supported by shaped brackets and adorned with shaped bargeboards. Two canted, hip-roofed bay windows, each containing eight panes, are present to each house. The upper storey features cross casement windows with six panes, projecting cills, and shaped keystone wedge lintels. Modillion eaves and coped gables are present, along with slightly projecting gable chimneys and one ridge chimney. The right gable chimney and ridge chimney have caps that have been replaced with blue brick. Large cast lead rainwater heads on each house bear the initials W.E.D. and the date 1768. Steps lead to the doors; those to Drake’s Cottage are protected by an old, plain wrought iron railing. The property is enclosed by walls made of large red sandstone slabs, which return to the house fronts, surrounding small front gardens. Interior features include cellars and enclosed oak stairs. Drake's Cottage incorporates six-panel doors and an oak small-frame to the left wall of the stairwell. Drake’s House includes broad-board doors fitted with wrought iron strap hinges, and a rear extension was added in the mid-20th century.
