Description

Hayhurst Bridge over Weaver Navigation, built in 1899, is a swing bridge made of steel. It features one pivoted span supported by asymmetrical bowstring lattice girders, with the pivot located on the west bank of the river. At each end of the bridge, there are steel double gates mounted on ornate cast iron posts. A cast iron plaque at the west end of each girder is inscribed in raised capitals, stating it was erected by the Weaver Navigation Trustees in 1899, with engineer J. A. Saner, M. Inst. C.E., and contractor for metal work A. Handyside and Company Ltd. from Derby and London.

The control cabin is timber framed and weatherboarded, positioned at an angle facing the river and bridge. It features a band of small-pane casements and has a pointed roof topped with an ornate cast iron finial. Wooden steps lead down to the river bank.

This bridge, along with Baron's Quay Bridge, is believed to be one of the earliest electrically powered swing bridges in Britain.
