Description
Navigation House is a house that was formerly the residence and office of an engineer, built for the Weaver Navigation Trust around 1856. It features a blue engineering brick plinth and walls made of Cheshire common brick, topped with a slate roof that has two ridge stacks. The gables are adorned with lattice-edged bargeboards. The building is two storeys high with cellars and consists of three bays.
The west front has a central doorway with a six-panel door and a rectangular overlight. To the right is a three-light casement window, while to the left is a two-light, small-paned casement with a cambered brick arch. Above the door, there is a range of three twelve-light sash windows with stone sills and lintels. All openings, except for the casement to the left of the door, have wedge lintels.
The garden front overlooks the River Weaver and features a range of three French windows with margin lights, and above them, a range of three four-light sash windows with margin lights and narrow centre lights that align with the French windows below. All these openings also have wedge lintels. The north gable includes a large stone-framed bay window for the office that overlooks Navigation Yard, along with a moulded four-panel door and rectangular overlight. Above this door, there is a single four-light sash window.
Inside, the house has a staircase with stick balusters, moulded newel posts, and a rail, along with six-panel doors throughout. The main reception rooms are characterized by deep moulded skirtings and cornices, and the main windows retain internal folding shutters. This slightly altered engineer's house is notable for its unusual windows and forms a complete group with its stable block, maintaining a close relationship to the Yard. It also has group value with the former Weaver Navigation Office and Clock Tower.
