Description
The British Waterways Board Area Office, originally the Weaver Navigation Office, was built in 1826. It is constructed of brown brick and features a hipped roof made of graded grey slate. The building has two storeys with three windows on the main facade and a right wing that contains two additional windows. The exterior includes a stone plinth, a first-floor cill band, and a moulded cornice.
The entrance features oak three-panel double doors set in a gauged brick round-arched recess, flanked by engaged Tuscan columns that support a wooden cornice beneath a radial-bar fan with three concentric bars. The windows are recessed 12-pane sashes with gauged brick heads, and there is a blocked round-arched doorway in the right wing. The lower storey has been extended at the rear, with 12-pane recessed sashes in the main block above.
Inside, there are Tuscan columns on either side of the entrance, and folding shutters in the embrasures. The open-string dogleg staircase has shaped brackets, stick balusters, and a curtail. There are three six-panel doors off the landing, with the door opposite the stair set in a panelled case featuring ornate moulded architraves.
