Description
The Town Bridge over Weaver Navigation and Control Cabin is a swing bridge built in 1899. It features a steel structure with one pivoted span supported by asymmetrical bowstring lattice girders, with the pivot located on the west bank of the river. At the west end of the bridge, there is a barrier with a spiked railing along the railway track, and at the east end, a pair of steel gates stands on ornate cast iron posts. Each girder at the west end bears a cast iron plaque inscribed in raised capitals, stating it was erected by the Weaver Navigation Trustees in 1899, with engineer J.A. Saner and contractor A. Handyside & Company Ltd. from Derby and London.
North of the bridge on the west bank is a timber-framed, weatherboarded control cabin, which has a wide-eaved hipped roof adorned with ornate finials. The cabin features small-pane casements that create a continuous band along the riverside and ends. A fixed steel ladder with a guardrail leads down to the river bank. This bridge and Hayhurst Bridge are believed to be the earliest electrically powered swing bridges in Britain.
