Description

This building is a Constitutional Club, now known as the R.A.O.B. Hall, constructed in 1911 by J Cawley. It is a timber-framed building designed to be lifted in case of subsidence, with plaster panels and a grey slate roof. The building is two storeys high with three windows. It has a small frame and a recessed porch to the right, featuring a cambered oak lintel and two mullioned and transomed casement windows to the left. The upper storey includes a central balcony with a balustrade and a jettied gable supported by brackets, featuring an ornate bressumer, bargeboards, and a finial. Rounded oriel windows with sidelights are located on either side of the balcony. All windows contain ornate leaded glass. Quadrant braces are visible in the plaster panels. The end gables have moulded beams. The interior contains a hall with dado panelling. The building is considered to be the best-preserved example of Cawley’s ornate timber-framed subsidence-liftable buildings.
