Description

Northwich Post Office, now a public house, was built in 1914 by Charles P. Wilkinson of the Office of Works. It is a small-framed timber structure designed to be lifted in case of subsidence, featuring recessed plaster panels and a tiled roof. The building has three storeys plus an attic and is symmetrical in design, showcasing an Elizabethan style with lavish ornamentation.

The prominent four-storey porch includes double doors set within a Tudor archway, topped with a balustraded leaded overlight. Paired pilasters support a bressumer inscribed with "POST OFFICE" in gilt Gothic lettering. An ornate two-storey oriel window is featured, along with a deeply jettied gable that has mullioned and transomed casements. To the left of the doorway is a mullioned and transomed casement and a Tudor-arched vehicular entrance leading to the sorting office at the rear. There are two mullioned and transomed windows to the right of the doorway, with two additional windows on each upper storey flanking the porch, and four gabled attic dormers.

The building is decorated with chevron and quatrefoil braces, along with ornate timber details on the panels. The eaves are coved plaster, and the front casements are leaded. The end gables are plain and small-framed. The sorting office features plain framing with a grey slate roof. Inside, the timber frame is exposed.
