Description

A pair of cottages, likely dating to around 1852 and possibly designed by James Harrison for the 2nd Marquis of Westminster. The cottages are built of Flemish bond brown brick, with steep grey slate roofs and a picturesque style. They are two storeys high. Number 4, on the left, has a recessed left wing with two stone steps leading to a four-panel door and a simple fanlight, situated in a corner. The main bay has a hip-roofed, single-storey canted bay window with four transomed three-pane lights. A cross-casement window is located on the left side of the main bay. Number 2 has a six-pane cross-casement window. A gabled porch is positioned on the right, with a door and fanlight on the flank and a four-pane casement window to the front, with a set-back gable. The first floor of Number 4 includes an inserted gabled dormer on the roof of the left wing, a small blocked opening, an inserted six-pane casement in the left side of the porch bay, a six-pane round-arched opening to the front, and a six-pane cross-casement to the main bay. Number 2 features a six-pane cross-casement window under a dormer gable and a four-pane casement window to the front of the recessed wing, on the right. The interiors were not inspected. Together with numbers 6-18 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway, these cottages represent an unusual example of mid-19th century town planning, similar to mid-20th century Radburn layouts, with a footpath serving the frontages of the cottages and vehicular streets located at the rear.
